| | Today was the first "competitive" race I took part in as part of my
training towards the ultimate goal; the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in
September. I haven't run anything competitively since a couple of 5k's
in 2005. Other than that, I've been off and on running in general
until February of this year.
So,
I arrived in Westford to get my packet, got my chip, and got ready for
the race. I started out with a bit of a short run to/from my car and
the starting line. I stretched out, and eventually took my place in
the pack of people lining up for the 10k. I had no idea what to expect
in terms of speed, so I hung toward the middle.
Well, after the
starting horn, it was pretty obvious I should have put myself closer to
the front. I weaved through the crowd pretty quickly, and found myself
behind a haldful of other runners. This scared me. Why? Because I
thought I had come out too quickly, at a pace I wouldn't be able to
maintain. I settled in behind a young woman to attempt to draft off of
her, and I stayed with her for the first three and a half miles or so.
Two more people passed me on my way to the finish line, but that was
all. I maintained my pace by reminding myself that I could quick, but
that I had the rest of the day today, and all day tomorrow to be sore,
so I might just as well run as hard as I could ;)
I ended up finishing in 41:39 (which is 6:42 miles, or 9mph), as the fourth M20-29 finisher, and 8th overall.
To say I am 'pleased' with the result would be an understatement ;)
This definitely gives me more confidence with my running as I move
forward toward the half-marathon at the end of the month, and the full
marathon in September. |
