| My three-week long bender of trying to get rid of random crap that is taking up space continues! Thanks to Zen Habits, I found the fantastic website Bookmooch, which is a great place where you can find people who want to read the books you have sitting around your house, and find great ideas on new things to read! My current read is 'World War Z', just for reference.
Right now I have a bunch of books listed on there, and my username is 'eb5649'. If you see something you want in my inventory, request it and I'll get it to you :)

| Last night was the last night of circuits. The running section of the workout is getting more intense, and will culminate over the next two weeks. Right now I am spending extended amounts of time at very high speeds, which is really, REALLY taxing on my cardiovascular system. I spent 0.75 mi at 10.8 mph, and then fell to 0.50 mi for the second interval. I followed that with 0.25 mi at 11.1 mph four times, and then 0.20 mi at 11.1 mph two times. Following that, I did the circuits, did a cooldown run, and stretched out before heading home. Today is an off day, and tomorrow will be the first of several very difficult running-only workouts.

| Today was the first "competitive" race I took part in as part of my
training towards the ultimate goal; the Toronto Waterfront Marathon in
September. I haven't run anything competitively since a couple of 5k's
in 2005. Other than that, I've been off and on running in general
until February of this year.
So,
I arrived in Westford to get my packet, got my chip, and got ready for
the race. I started out with a bit of a short run to/from my car and
the starting line. I stretched out, and eventually took my place in
the pack of people lining up for the 10k. I had no idea what to expect
in terms of speed, so I hung toward the middle.
Well, after the
starting horn, it was pretty obvious I should have put myself closer to
the front. I weaved through the crowd pretty quickly, and found myself
behind a haldful of other runners. This scared me. Why? Because I
thought I had come out too quickly, at a pace I wouldn't be able to
maintain. I settled in behind a young woman to attempt to draft off of
her, and I stayed with her for the first three and a half miles or so.
Two more people passed me on my way to the finish line, but that was
all. I maintained my pace by reminding myself that I could quick, but
that I had the rest of the day today, and all day tomorrow to be sore,
so I might just as well run as hard as I could ;)
I ended up finishing in 41:39 (which is 6:42 miles, or 9mph), as the fourth M20-29 finisher, and 8th overall.
To say I am 'pleased' with the result would be an understatement ;)
This definitely gives me more confidence with my running as I move
forward toward the half-marathon at the end of the month, and the full
marathon in September. | | |
| Today was the second-to-last circuit workout before the half-marathon at the end of the month. I ran 8 miles altogether (about 5.8 to the gym, and 2.2 on the way back home), and did two circuits in the middle. Running to the gym was nice; it was a beautiful day, and there were a couple of other people out running as well which was nice to see. Tomorrow I will be running a 10k in Westford, so hopefully my legs won't be sore from today's run.

| So work is sending me to a robotics fair in San Francisco the weekend of the 19th. I've already made plans to go see the Giants vs. A's (at McAfee Coliseum, cool!) on Friday night; what else should I do while I'm out there? I've got two other nights free that I need to fill up, so let me know what the can't miss things to do/see in the greater San Francisco/Oakland area are!
